Use a tape measure to find the longest points of the room in both directions.
Be sure to include any recesses, drop backs, bay windows, or doorways in your measurements.
Tip: Add a little extra to your measurements. If your carpet is being fitted to underlay and grippers, the fitter will need a small amount to tuck between the gripper and skirting board. Also better to be on the safe side.
Although carpets are typically sold as 4m or 5m wide, manufacturers often have a small margin of variation.
This means a 4m wide carpet may come in slightly under 4m.
If your room measures exactly 4m or just under, it’s important to take this into account to avoid fitting issues.
Check for Uneven Walls - Measure both ends of each wall to see if they run out or taper. This helps us account for any irregularities in the room shape.
If your room is L-shaped or has any unusual layout, it’s best to sketch a simple floor plan. Include all measurements and label any key features like doors, windows, and alcoves.
The most important is the length and width. From this room there will be waste that could be utilised elsewhere .
If the wall extends beyond the doorway (drops back), make sure to measure the full distance from wall to wall, including the recessed area behind the door
These rooms can be tricky and often result in more waste. To measure the length, measure diagonally from the top left corner to the bottom right corner. For the width, measure from the top right corner to the bottom left corner.
This helps capture the widest points for an accurate fit.
As you can see from the diagram to the left, simply putting the carpet on a angle doesn't work.
